Reading

“Imagine a school where pupils enjoy, discuss and work with a core of books. These ‘essential reads’ would be a store of classics, creating a living library inside a child’s mind. This is the Reading Spine… a common bank of stories that bind the community together”

Our Reading & Phonics Intent

All children will leave our Infant School with the reading skills they need to access the Junior Curriculum with confidence. Through carefully planned, systematic, multi-sensory Phonics lessons, children become equipped to decode words accurately, develop an understanding of our complex phonetic code and consequently, become fluent readers. English lessons focus on developing a ‘living library’ in children’s minds, created by engagement with high quality books throughout their early years. Our approach to teaching reading is ‘Phonics First…but not forever’ as fluency, comprehension and enjoyment of reading are our ultimate goals.
