Phonics

“At one magical instant in your early childhood, the page of a book – that string of confused, alien ciphers – shivered into meaning. Words spoke to you, gave up their secrets; at that moment, whole universes opened. You became, irrevocably, a reader.”

Alberto Manguel

Our Reading & Phonics Intent

All children will leave our Infant School with the reading skills they need to access the Junior Curriculum with confidence. Through carefully planned, systematic, multi-sensory Phonics lessons, children become equipped to decode words accurately, develop an understanding of our complex phonetic code and consequently, become fluent readers. English lessons focus on developing a ‘living library’ in children’s minds, created by engagement with high quality books throughout their early years. Our approach to teaching reading is ‘Phonics First…but not forever’ as fluency, comprehension and enjoyment of reading are our ultimate goals.
